A superb, solid, seal signet ring crafted substantially in 9 carat gold.
The piece is hand carved with a clenched fist, rising up from the ground symbolising solidarity, resilience and resistance with the words ‘ABSIT INVIDA' ‘LET US BE WITHOUT ENVY’
The Latin phrase and the symbol of the clenched fist share a deeply connected history in antique jewellery, functioning as powerful protective charms rooted in ancient folklore.
In heraldry, a clenched fist is usually described as a "dexter hand clenched" and together with the motto we can see that this pairing belongs to specific lineages:
In Irish heraldry, variations of the McCarthy crest feature a dexter hand clenched or an arm in armour. The McCarthy family line heavily ties back to Southwestern Ireland and branch families frequently intermarried or associated with the O'Cahan family, who officially used the Abist Invidia motto.
It is my professional opinion that this piece is antique, however it has at some point been re-sized and bears hallmarks for London 1981 which I believe was stamped at the point of resize when the original hallmarks were lost in the process. I can't prove this, it's just my opinion.
A mega pinky ring, you'll never take it off.
