Gold cased jewelley was extremely popular in the Georgian and Victorian eras and were used for things like seal fobs, watches, watch keys and other working items. The idea being that the piece would be much stronger and last longer if the core was made from a more robust metal than gold.

Unlike modern day plating, old gold cased pieces have a thick layer of gold applied over a base metal meaning you get a hard wearing piece that will wear well and last many years.

This likey Victorian pocket watch key has a coiled snake to the centre which is super cool and collectible and one that I've not seen before.

Use this as a charm or pendant or slide it onto a hoop earring to add a bit of edge.
